Urban Roots - Volunteer Opportunity

Saturday, June 25, 2022 (9:00 AM - 11:30 AM) (CDT)

Description

The Leadership Service Committee is providing you an opportunity to give back! Roll your sleeves up, get ready to get a little dirty, and assist on the Urban Roots farm! Urban Roots invites you to step away from your daily life and visit their South farm. You will soak up the sun, get a little muddy, and help support their mission. Spots are limited and registration is required. Registration will close at 4pm on June 24th.

Please Note: Once you register, you'll be required to complete the Urban Roots Waiver to volunteer via the confirmation email.

About Urban Roots
Urban Roots uses food and farming to transform the lives of young people and inspire, engage, and nourish the community. They believe that empowered youth can nourish our community in so many ways, and they are thrilled to be celebrating 10 years of this work. By engaging youth leaders on their farms in East and South Austin, they create a safe place where young people can experience first-hand the transformational power of meaningful hard work in order to become healthy, productive, civically-engaged community members.

Additional Details

  • Temperatures are getting warmer so stay prepared for the elements and don't forget to bring a water bottle! Over hydrate & take frequent breaks, wear sunscreen and bug spray, wear thin layers of clothing that can be easily removed, and grab a hat.

  • Spring is here and that means bugs and pollen outnumber us greatly. Take care of your sinus needs and bring any rescue/intervention devices with you (i.e. inhalers, epi pens, benadryl, etc.). Fire Ants have been especially active lately so be mindful and communicate if any mounds are discovered.

  • Masks are strongly recommended for high-risk attendees when not actively eating or drinking. Please continue to practice safe hygiene both on and off the farm & wash your hands frequently, especially between farm tasks.

  • Feel free to bring any tools you may want to make yourself comfortable (we have everything needed, this is for personal preference). We will do our best to communicate what specific tasks you all will tackle the week prior to your visit.  If you would like to bring personal equipment like gloves, pliers, spades, etc. we welcome it, however, we are not liable for lost or stolen items.

Pre-registration is required. Volunteer spots are available to AYC Members only. If you're not an AYC Member, please email AYC staff at info@austinyoungchamber.org.
